SUPPORT ECHOES of SILENCE

 

For forty years Echoes of Silence has survived by skin of teeth and seat of pants. It's exciting that way (if tough on the trousers!), and it brings us closer to the great people with whom we work. They drop into bed without any guarantee there'll be food for the children in the morning, and yet somehow manage to greet you next day with a big smile as they send the children off to school looking bandbox fresh. To say it's a privilege to live with them and work beside them is a cliche. So what? It certainly is!  

   But more than that: today's Nicaragua is once again the 'threat of a good example', as OXFAM's Jenny Pierce put it back during the illegal wars of the 1980s. Nicaragua is a paradise. Or should be. Pound for pound, we live in one of the richest countries on the planet, with tremendous reserves of real wealth: water, biodiversity, renewable energy potential, living indigenous cultures, wonderful coffee.  Historically, and even today, the West's 'developed' way of life has appropriated these magnificent resources to sustain the ultimately unsustainable.  As the effects of our myopic folly begin to come home to roost here in the UK/USA, and with Nicaragua right in the global warming crosshairs, far from seeking revenge, Nicaraguans now offer the world a new way of doing global business based on fair trade, cooperation, compassion and healing the planet.  The promise of a good example!

     We're here, delightedly, at the coal face; please join us in this great adventure. Your donation enables us to continue to work pro bono beside these terrific people, and to continue to wonder at, learn from, and make known their magnificent spirit, exciting projects and profound commitment to a new world where the children of one become the children of all, where we share intelligently and humanely the marvelous riches of our one, exquisite, exquisitely fragile, planet .
